Redesign or progressive improvement: how to decide

Smartphone sur surface réfléchissante — refonte ou amélioration

The decision between full redesign and progressive improvement is one of the most significant in managing a digital asset. It commits substantial resources and has lasting consequences.

The case for redesign

A full redesign is justified when the underlying structure of the site has become incompatible with current objectives. When the information architecture has evolved by accumulation without a master plan, when the technology limits evolution possibilities, when the visual identity needs rebuilding — in these cases, partial corrections only produce partial results.

Redesign is also the appropriate response when a significant transformation of the activity renders the existing site fundamentally misaligned — change of positioning, merger, strategic reorientation.

The case for progressive improvement

Progressive improvement is more efficient when the fundamental structure of the site is sound and problems are localised. Working on high-impact pages, improving technical performance, refining certain user journeys — these targeted interventions can produce significant results at controlled cost.

It is also preferable when time is a constraint. A full redesign takes time — analysis, design, development, testing. A targeted improvement can be deployed more quickly.

The necessary prerequisite

Whatever direction is chosen, the decision must be grounded in a structured analysis of the existing situation. Without this prior audit, the risk is choosing the response that seems most logical rather than the one that is truly suited to the situation.
